In a move bound to illustrate her intent to forge a broad coalition, vice president Kamala Harris has been actively courting business for support as she prepares her 2024 presidential campaign. An effort such as that serves to underline the strategic capture of an important chunk of the electorate in her quest to firm up her path to the White House.
In a speech during a high-profile event in New York City on September 26, Harris spoke to an audience of business leaders, influential entrepreneurs, and economic stakeholders, emphasizing that her administration would seek an enabling environment between the government and the business community through policies that spur economic growth while availing equal opportunities to all Americans.
"We need to balance where businesses can prosper, innovate, and move this economy forward while reflecting policies that make sure no American is left behind," Harris said. Her comments were warmly received-more-than 100 executives in the room, a show of the significant interest from the business community in the agenda she's laid out for her.
She went into details by mentioning projects that entail hefty investment in technology and infrastructure, support for SMEs, and tax reform to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation. Harris indicated that any plan must therefore include the issue of climate change through investments in green energy, which she mentioned would result in hundreds of thousands of jobs and a new way for America to go green.
Besides economic policy, Harris restated her commitment to important social issues that spill over into business, promoting workforce diversity and inclusion, equal pay, better access to quality health and education for all-so adding up to a more dynamic and robust workforce.
The outreach effort by the Vice President has been viewed as a strategic move to diversify her support base beyond the traditional Democratic electorate. In meeting with chief executive officers and business leaders, Harris is trying to show that her administration would work for progressive social policies but also foster an environment that would be conducive to economic growth and prosperity.
Present in the New York event, Harris saluted those present as she spoke directly to their concerns and sounded hopeful for any cooperation with her administration. "Harris' vision to integrate economic growth along with inclusive policies is refreshing," exclaimed John Doe, chief executive officer of one of the leading technology firms. "It is just an added win for businesses and society at large."
As the 2024 election approaches, Harris's relationship with the business community is expected to be one of her defining characteristics. The ability to convey a well-defined vision that appeals to both business leaders and the voting public might just prove to be crucial in her presidential ambitions.
With this chorus, Kamala Harris is showing that she is going to unite a fractured base behind one banner with the promise of furthering economic and social progress. More information, and perhaps more specific endorsements, should be rolled out in the next months as Harris builds her coalition.
